feeling: full (for me)
listening to: nothing
Part Deux.
You know, I HATE classes where the teacher just automatically expects students to have photographic memories for everything he says and puts on the overhead in the way of notes. My int. studies class taught me this weeks ago but I guess I only just realized it this morning. The man puts a transparency COVERED with text on the overhead, talks for about 30 seconds relating to it and about another minute or two relating to completely unrelated topics, and then, when I've just gotten about the first 1/3 of the page reproduced in my notes, he takes it down and moves on to another text-covered slide, repeat, repeat. An even better example: this morning in the middle of lecture he asked "Who's doing their paper on Indonesia?" and this guy raised his hand, so the professor went on, "Well then, here you go. You're all set with this." and puts up a transparency of this chart with GNP (or GDP, or both, or something) figures for Indonesia, with about a dozen columns and 4 or 5 rows, at least. Thirty seconds later he takes the thing down. Yep, I'm sure Indonesia Mike is all set for his 13-20 page paper now that he's had ample time to completely memorize that chart and store it in his memory.
Teachers who think their students should come into their classes already knowing all the material that they came into this class for the purpose of learning drive me insane. I guess I'm fortunate that I've only had 2 or 3 of them in my years here. Most of my teachers lately have been in the Japanese/East Asian language and lit department, and they rock. Best department this university has. :P Have I mentioned I love my major? If I didn't have to take so many stinking general curriculum classes (like international studies, hey hey) college would be a blast.
I usually like Thursdays (after the noon hour at least) because I have nothing important to do. Only one class on Fridays, but it's Japanese, so I don't really consider my Thursday night homework for that as "homework". Just practice. Yeah... not today though. I am screwed beyond salvation if I don't get at least a few things accomplished before today is done. Thinking I can get one of my two 3-5 page linguistics papers done today... maybe find an experiment or talk to attend later today or tomorrow for linguistics, then go to another next week for that beautiful extra credit... oh, I need to clean the tanks today too...
Speaking of the tanks, Phoenix made a bubblenest this week. It's small and misshapen and dippy looking, but it's a bubblenest. He used to have big monster ones going every week in between tank cleanings, and other times he'd make multiple ones in a day... but then he got sick and stopped making them for months. So I was greatly amused by this week's little accomplishment. He's just about back to his old self again.
I thought I had something else to mention... but I can't remember for all I'm worth what it was...
